Grizzlies beat Lakeside, Riverside, Colville

NEWPORT - The Newport Grizzlies boys’ basketball team got three wins last week, beating Lakeside 55-51 Tuesday, June 1, at Lakeside and returning home the next day to beat Riverside 48-41. Newport went to Colville Monday night, June 7, where they got a 67-58 win.

Against Lakeside, Newport got off to a quick start, up 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

"We came out pretty quick in this one capitalizing on some transition baskets,” Newport coach Brett Mackey says.

The Grizzlies held on to their lead after a 12-12 second period, but Lakeside closing to within three by the end of the third quarter. Newport kept their cool and put the game away with a 15-13 fourth period.

"Lakeside hit some big shots down the stretch to get this one close. I thought our guys handled themselves very well down the stretch by managing time and score situations," Mackey says. "It was a typical NEA League physical grind and any win on the road is a big plus."

Ben Krogh had nine rebounds to go with 18 points. Seven points came in the fourth quarter. Krogh hit 5 of 6 from the free throw line down the stretch. Michael Owen also had eight rebounds in his effort.

Newport's Tiegen Prange was high scorer for the game, with 23 points.

Wednesday, June 2, Newport had a close first half with Riverside, trailing the first period 8-7 and with the game tied 20-20 at the half.

Newport played better in the second half, going on a 17-8 third quarter run.

"After another very sluggish half we were able to move the ball better in the second half and get some good looks inside," Mackey says. Owen scored six straight inside the paint at the beginning of the second half. "We had to grind out another game against a gritty Riverside crew."

Mackey says Krogh and Owen pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Bear Smith hit a key 3-pointer with about 4 minutes left as time was expiring on the shot clock to extend the lead to seven and Nick Deerwester hit four straight free throws late to help secure the win.

Monday night against Colville, Colville took a 13-12 first quarter lead before Newport went on a 19-6 second quarter run. Colville answered with an 18-12 third quarter. Newport led 43-37 at the end of the third quarter and added three more to their lead for the 67-58 win.

Krogh led all scorers with 24 points. Prange scored a dozen and Deerwester got 10.

"I am really pleased with our guys’ ability to navigate a tough, busy schedule," Mackey says.
