Lady Grizzlies almost ground Eagles in loss

LAKESIDE – Newport girls’ basketball played a tight game against Lakeside during an away game losing 56-53 on Tuesday, June 1.

Alika Robinson led Newport with 16 points. The Eagle’s flew right out in the first quarter, scoring 15 points while the Lady Grizzlies got six. Newport made up for lost time though in the second quarter, grounding Lakeside at nine points while Newport scored 18. The third quarter saw both teams battling for control of the court, with Newport scoring 13 points and Lakeside, 18.

Lakeside’s Nina Chittum hit a go-ahead lay-in to put her team up by three with 24 seconds to go in the fourth and the Eagles (2-2, 2-2) edged the Grizzlies (0-4, 0-3) in the Northeast A League game. Avery Haff led Lakeside with 12 points and Sophia Stadler added 11 points.

Throughout the game Newport had two 3-point goals and Lakeside had nine. Newport had 15 total fouls and Lakeside had 19.

Newport played Riverside June 2, but details were not available before press time. The Grizzlies traveled to Colville for a game Monday, June 7 after deadline. Results will be in next week’s newspaper. Newport will host the Lakeside Eagles this time for a game on Wednesday, June 9 at 5:45 p.m. The Freeman Scotties come to Newport for a game Thursday, June 10 at 5:45 p.m. The Grizzlies go to Deer Park Tuesday, June 15 at 5:45 p.m.
