NEWPORT – Teens who enjoy the outdoors and want to learn about pursuing a career in the forestry industry are encouraged to participate in the Pend Oreille County Forestry Contest. The event will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Indian Creek Community Forest, located 6 miles north of Newport. Students, including home schooled students from Washington and Idaho in grades 9 through 12 who are interested in forestry are eligible to participate in this event.
This competition will follow the Washington Future Farmers of America (FFA) guidelines. A study guide will be provided to contestants ahead of time to prepare for the contest, but students may not use the guide during the event. There will be four test stations, these tests will include compass, pacing, and slope measurements, tool identification, tree identification, and map interpretation.
In addition to the four FFA test stations, there will be two non FFA workshop stations of timber cruising and forest management.
