Bull rider wins on same bull that hurt friend

CUSICK – Two years ago Hubba Hagerty was severely injured in the bull riding at Cusick after winning the event. He was back at the Cusick Fair Rodeo this year. Haggerty’s friend, Jason Hodge, drew Shamrock, the bull that hurt Haggerty.

“His best friend drew the same bull,” rodeo stock contractor Pat McLauglin of Shamrock Rodeo says. “He rode him out of the same chute.”

When Hodge got off the spinning bull, he was marked 90 points, the rodeo’s highest score. He was the only rider to make a qualified ride, winning $1,529, the rodeo’s biggest check.

Barrel racers and team ropers also cashed big checks.

Jadah Bell of Colville won the open barrel racing with a 16.59 second run. She pocketed $970.

The team of Ty Schlect of Spokane and Sam Parker of Northport won the team roping with a 6.96 second run. They each won $815.

Breakaway roping was won by Jayce Chrisman with a time of 3.18. She won $790 for the run.

The chute doggin’ is an event held at Cusick and not many other places. It is like steer wrestling except the contestant starts on the ground, then throws a steer. Jessie Macias of Madras, Oregon won the event and $790 for a 3.06 second time.

Peyton Robinson of Prosser, Washington won the bareback riding with a 74-point ride. He won $560.

Another Prosser cowboy, Dillon Zieske, won the ranch bronc riding and $460 for an 85-point ride.

The junior barrel racing was won by Kalyna Vopat with a 16.9 second run.

She won $270.

Results were unavailable for the mutton bustin’ as of press time.

Crowds were good for the rodeo, said McLaughlin. He said Saturday was full.
