NEWPORT - School starts this week for most high schools and with it fall sports.
For Newport fall sports include football, volleyball, girls’ soccer and cross country, as well cheerleading. Football players will see some limited competition at Nine Mile Falls this Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Lakeside Jamboree. Newport has a home football game against Riverside Friday night, Sept. 6.
Most Newport sports start after Labor Day. Saturday, Sept. 7, Newport goes to Priest River for a volleyball match and cross country runners head to Farragut State Park for a race.
Sports at Priest River are on a pay to play basis this year following the failure of the supplemental levy. In addition to players’ money, there has been private funders who have contributed in all amounts, including some sizeable donations.
Priest River sports are the first sports to start in the fall, although school doesn’t start until Sept. 3, later than the other area schools. Spartan volleyball hosted Timberlake Tuesday, Aug. 27. They’ll be back at home against St. Maries Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
Spartans boys and girls soccer will go to St. Maries Wednesday, Aug. 28. Both teams are home Thursday, Aug. 29 for games with Timberlake. The girls game starts at 4 p.m. and boys game at 6 p.m.
The Priest River Spartans football team goes to Grangeville for their first game Friday, Sept.
6. The following week the Spartans go to Newport for a game.
At Selkirk, the Ranger football team will go to Curlew for their first game Friday, Sept. 6. Saturday, Sept. 7, the volleyball team will play at the Chewelah Invite. The cross country team is also scheduled for a meet Saturday, although details were unannounced.
At Cusick, the Panthers will play their first football game at home Friday, Sept. 6, against Almira-Coulee/ Hartline. Cusick volleyball will get underway Sept. 10 with a home match against Valley Christian.
