Spartan volleyball starts with wins

PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River Spartan volleyball team has two games under their belts already, both wins at home.

Tuesday, Aug. 27 the Spartans hosted Timberlake, losing the first set 25-17.

“Our girls took a loss in the first match and turned the game around,” head coach Katlyn Ward says.

The Spartans took the subsequent sets 25-21, 25-19 and 25-19.

Jayda Storro had seven aces and 27 assists for Priest River in the win. Desi Humphrey led the offense with 15 kills.

Aleigha Jenson had three blocks and Toni Marinello had 20 digs for Priest River.

Two nights later the Spartans were at home again, sweeping St. Maries in three sets in the Central Idaho League opener Thursday, Aug. 29. Priest River won 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19.

“Varsity came out swinging and had relentless hustle!”

Ward says. “The girls played like a team and it showed.

Great way to start off league play!”

Storro came through with assists, chalking up 20. Raygn Turner had the most digs with 13. She also served four aces.

Humphrey had seven kills, Jensen had three blocks and Paityn Yount had four kills.

The Spartans go to Newport Saturday, Sept. 7 for a match with Newport that starts at 5 p.m.

The Spartans are home for two games next week. Monday, Sept. 9 the Spartans host Riverside and Tuesday they play Kellogg. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
