Priest River boys start soccer with win

ST. MARIES – The Priest River boys soccer team opened their season with a pair of Central Idaho League wins over St. Maries and Orofino.

The Spartans shut out St. Maries 9-0 Wednesday, Aug. 28. Several Priest River players scored more than once.

Carter Cook, Cameron Howell and Connor Stevens each scored two goals.

Gunnar Petit scored Priest River’s final goal.

Friday, Aug. 30, Priest River went to Orofino, where they got a 2-1 win.

Senior Connor Stevens scored first for the Spartans in the first half and Gunnar Pettit scored in the second half.

Priest River coach Ryan Carruth says his team played well, especially goal- keeper Baylor White, who had 11 saves. Priest River offense came through with plays as well.

“We had some very bright moments today and created some good chances on goal,” Carruth says. “Obviously it’s always nice to find the back of the net and to grind out a result against a tough opponent while we are still early in the season building our form and fitness levels. I was pleased with the attitude of our young men today – they were up for it and this gives us lots to build on as we look ahead to our next match.”

Carruth says other Priest River players who had a good game were Carter Cook, Cameron Howell, Nathan Stifel and Jack Zalewski.

Orofino scored late in the game on a penalty kick.

Thursday, Sept. 6, the Spartans are home against Timberlake at 6 p.m. Saturday the team goes to Grangeville.
