Area teams back on gridiron Friday
NEWPORT – All four area high school football teams will be in action Friday, Sept. 6.
Newport is at home against Riverside for their opener at 7 p.m. Priest River goes to Grangeville for a game that starts at 6 p.m. Cusick will be at home against Almira/ Coulee-Hartline at 7 p.m. and Selkirk travels to Curlew for a game that starts at 7 p.m.
St. Maries gets by Spartan girls
ST. MARIES – The Priest River girls soccer team opened its season with a close 3-2 loss to St. Maries Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Spartan coach Nick Tucker said most of his team hasn’t played much soccer since grade school.
“It was a learning experience,” he says. While the Spartans have a number of seniors, they haven’t played since they were in elementary school.
Anna Foster, the Spartans’ freshman goalkeeper had two saves.
St. Maries got two goals in the first half and their third in the second half.

Priest River hosts Timberlake Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. The Spartans go to Grangeville Saturday, Sept. 7 for a 2 p.m. match.
Volleyballers in action
NEWPORT – While Priest River volleyball has already had a couple games, most the other high schools start their volleyball season this week.
Newport plays Priest River Saturday at Newport at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, Newport hosts Reardan at 6:30 p.m.
Priest River is back at home Monday, Sept. 9 for a match with Riverside at 7 p.m.
Selkirk has their first competition Saturday, Sept. 7, at the daylong Chewelah Invite. Cusick opens their season at home with a match against Valley Christian Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m.
