NEWPORT – The Newport girls soccer team lost their first two games of the season, losing 3-0 at Riverside and 12-0 at home against Freeman Thursday, Sept. 12.
Newport’s goalkeeper Emily Hoffman had 13 saves for the Grizzlies, but with Riverside taking 22 shots, couldn’t hold off the Rams. Newport got six shots.
Freeman dominated Newport from the start when they visited Thursday, scoring six goals in the first half and another six in the second, getting the 12-0 win.
Hoffman had a dozen saves for Newport against Freeman. The Grizzlies took six shots, but didn’t score.
Newport went to Spangle for a game with Upper Columbia Academy Tuesday, Sept. 17. Newport hosts Priest River Thursday, Sept. 19. Tuesday, Sept. 24, the team goes to Spokane for a game with St. George’s.
The games start at 4 p.m.
Selkirk volleyball off to good start
IONE – The Selkirk Ranger volleyball team opened their season with two home wins. They swept Wellpinit 3-0 Tuesday, Sept. 10 at home. A couple days later, Thursday, they were back in front of hometown fans for a 3-2 win over Kettle Falls.
The Rangers head to Cusick Friday, Sept. 20 for a game that starts at 5 p.m.
Cusick volleyball opens with losses
CUSICK – The Cusick Panthers volleyball team lost its first two games, falling 3-0 to Valley Christian at home Tuesday, Sept. 10. Friday, Sept. 13, the Panthers travelled to Northport, where they also lost in three sets 25-3, 25-8 and 25-6.
The Panthers have their homecoming game with Selkirk Friday, Sept. 20.
The game starts at 5 p.m.
The next day, Saturday, Cusick hosts Curlew at 2 p.m.
Newport volleyball loses league opener
NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzlies girls volleyball team opened their Northeast 2B League season at home Tuesday, Sept. 10, against Reardan. The first set was close, with Reardan coming away with a 26-24 win.
Reardan went on to sweep Newport 3-0, taking the second set 25-18 and the third 25-11.
Lindsay Collison led Newport in kills, with a half dozen and aces, with three. Kenna Arthur had a game high six assists and Grace Keck had 17 digs for Newport.
Saturday the team was at Freeman’s Rip A Shot Tournament. Results were not available at press time. Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Grizzlies went to Chewelah for a match.
They will play at home Thursday, Sept. 19, when Newport hosts Davenport for a 6:30 p.m. game.
Saturday, Sept. 21, the Grizzlies go to Riverside for a 12:30 p.m. match.
They play at Northwest Christian Tuesday, Sept.
24, a match that starts at 6:30 p.m.
