Spartan girls get two Riverside wins, fall to Kellogg

PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River Spartan volleyball team took on Riverside twice last week, sweeping the Rams 3-0 at home Monday, Sept. 9 and taking a five-set road win Thursday, Sept. 12.

In Thursday’s match, the Spartans won the first two sets 25-17, 25-14 before dropping the next two 25-22, 25-21. They came through in the final set 15-7 for the win in their first away game.

“We knew it would be an adjustment,” Spartan Coach Katlyn Ward says. “The girls played so well we got to have our floaters play an entire set. Our starters went back in to try to gain some points at the end but I waited too long to put them back in. That being said, our floaters nearly beat the varsity team!”

Desi Humphrey led in kills, with 10, Aleigha Jensen and Kenadie Kingery each had three blocks. Jensen also was the leading server with four aces. Jayda Storro had 22 assists. Toni Marinello had 11 digs in the win.

Monday the Spartans won the first two sets against the visiting Rams 25-21, 25-22 and finished them off with a 25-15 set. Sophomore Raygn Turner has become a team leader, Ward says.

“She’s falling into her role and keeping the energy up and rolling.”

The week’s play wasn’t all good for the Spartans, who lost a five set match to Kellogg at home Tuesday, Sept. 10. After losing the first set 29-27, the Spartans rallied to take the next two 25-29, 25-29. But Kellogg turned the tables, winning the next two sets 27-25 and 15-10 for the match.

Jayda Storro had 25 assists and served a half dozen aces for the Spartans.

Toni Morinello had 20 digs for Priest River, Desi Humphrey led the Spartan in hits, with seven and Aleigha Jenson had four blocks for Priest River.

The Spartans are away for the next three games.

Tuesday, Sept. 17, Priest River went to St. Maries, Friday, Sept. 20 they are at Orofino and Saturday, Sept. 21, they go to Grangeville.

Monday, Sept. 23, the girls are at home against Bonners Ferry for a game that starts at 7:30 p.m.
