IONE – Selkirk and Northport have joined together for football, keeping the Rangers’ name. The Rangers got a home win Friday, beating Columbia 42-24.
“It was a nice game for us,” Ranger coach Kelly Cain says.
“We came out strong offensively and executed our game plan on defense.”
The Rangers went up 26-0 in the first quarter, starting with a 22-yard touchdown run by Parker Petrich. Petrich then hit Spencer Duty on a 60-yard TD pass play. Duty broke an 88-yard TD run. Duty then threw a 29yard TD pass to Danny Searson.
Petrich hit Henry Thompson for a successful two-point conversion.
“Columbia responded in the second quarter and showed a lot of grit climbing back into the game,” Cain says. Columbia scored on runs of 47, 22 and three yards, making all their point after attempts.
The teams went into halftime with Selkirk up 26-24.
“We had to make some adjustments at halftime and the team did a great job of adjusting,” Cain says. “The big thing though, was that we didn’t hang our heads when the lead was cut to two at the half with Columbia scoring at the end of the second quarter.”
Duty got into the end zone again in the third quarter on a 14-yard run. Petrich threw to Thompson for the extra points.
Duty scored again on a twoyard run for the Rangers’ last touchdown, with Petrich carrying in the two-point conversion.
“We were able to add a couple scores, and the defense pitched a second half shutout,” Cain says.
“It was a nice win all around.”
Searson was the Rangers’ leading rusher, with 53 yards on eight carries. On defense he had an interception.
Petrich had seven carries for 49 yards for the Rangers, Jaxson Chantry had a dozen runs for 48 yards. Chantry had nine tackles and an interception on defense.
Selkirk-Northport next plays at Cusick for the Panthers’ homecoming game Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m.
