Newport girls take tough soccer loss
SPANGLE – The Newport girls soccer team lost an away match Tuesday, Sept. 17, to Upper Columbia Academy, a private school near Spangle. The Grizzlies lost 3-2 in overtime.
“It was a tough loss especially after going up 2-0 in the beginning of the game and then allowing the other team to come back,” Newport coach Laura Verity says.
The first Newport goal was scored by Joelle Brandtner, off an assist from Lucy Bowen, and the second goal was by Ella Monk.
“UCA scored one goal in the last seconds of the first half, making it 2-1 at the break,” Verity says. “They then got a second goal tying it up in regulation. The game winner was a penalty kick awarded to UCA because one of their players was tripped in the penalty box.”
Newport played St. George’s Tuesday. They will be back at home for the next two games. Thursday, Sept. 26 Newport hosts Davenport and Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Grizzlies will play Reardan. Both games start at 4 p.m.
