NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzlies girls soccer team got a 6-2 win over the visiting Priest River Spartans Thursday, Sept. 19. The Spartans were playing with no substitutes.
Paige Rivera got Newport on the board first with a goal assisted by Marri Hinchcliff at the 12-minute mark. Three minutes later Ella Monk scored an unassisted goal for the Grizzlies.
Newport was up 2-0 at the half.
Monk scored another goal at the 42nd minute. Joelle Brandtner, with an assist by Marri Hinchcliff scored at the 45th minute.
Priest River broke through with a score in the 54th minute by Katrina Davis. Lucy Bowen scored for Newport in the 59th minute, with an assist by Monk.
Lizzie McCracken scored Priest River’s second goal in the 71st minute. Newport’s Holly Waterman had the final score of the game in the 77th minute, to give Newport the 6-2 win.
Newport took 24 shots on goal, with Priest River getting off half that many, 12.
Priest River goalkeeper Kylee Swoboda was busy. She had a dozen saves. Newport goalie Emily Hoffman had eight saves and Newport’s eighth grade goalkeeper Emily Verity had two stops.
