Spirit Lake Avista power outage planned

SPIRIT LAKE - Approximately 1,762 Avista electric customers in the Spirit Lake area will experience a power outage on Sunday, Oct.

6, Avista announced in a news release. The planned outage will start at 9 p.m. and end at 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7.

Impacted customers will be notified. No road closures are expected during the outage time.

During this time, Avista crews will be performing equipment upgrades in the area.

Customers who have questions or concerns can contact Avista at 800227-9187.

Student Mock Election now open

OLYMPIA — Young Washingtonians across the state are invited to participate in the 2024 Student Mock Election presented by the Office of the Secretary of State.

The Student Mock Election is a non-partisan, educational event that teaches children to be informed voters. All K-12 students in Washington state are welcome to participate by casting votes on races and measures.

Ballots, vote tabulation sheets, posters, and Voters’ Pamphlets are available for download at www.sos.wa.gov/mockelection. Free “I Voted” stickers can be ordered from the website as well.

In the alternate ballot, students can vote on issues of special importance to their age group, including cell phone usage in schools, whether pineapple is a suitable pizza topping, and choosing the state’s Cryptid Ambassador.

From Oct. 1 until the Nov. 5 General Election, participation statistics will be available on the Secretary of State’s Mock Election engagement dashboard website at www.sos.wa.gov/student- mock-election-dashboard. The Mock Election website also offers a free Teaching Elections in Washington State curriculum book and a series of 30-45 minute lessons to help students learn how elections work.

Weed Board meeting canceled

NEWPORT – The Pend Oreille County Weed Board’s Wednesday, Oct.

9 meeting is canceled, according to Loretta Nichols, the Board’s Coordinator.
