Creative District puts mural on Playhouse

Artist Jamie Rose Lord recently started painting a mural on the Pend Oreille Playhouse in Newport. The mural is part of a project initiated by the Newport Creative District. In partnership with the Pend Oreille Players and help from a grant from Washington State Arts Commission, this mural is the first undertaken by the nonprofit organization. The project is expected to be completed by Oct. 5. The Creative District Program was started in Washington State as a means for communities to grow their economies by promoting the arts and creative sector jobs. The creative sector contributes 8.7% to the state’s GDP. Newport became certified as an official Creative District in Nov. 2023. The city is one of fifteen Creative Districts in the state. The mural project is one of two capital projects approved for funding.
