PRIEST RIVER – Bring forth the lederhosen, raise your steins and dust off those dirndls. The annual Oktoberfest celebration returns to Priest River Saturday, Oct. 5, 2-7 p.m. in downtown. The event is family-friendly and open to the public, with live music, dance performances, games, food and of course, beer.
Food options include bratwurst, pretzels, and other German treats while craft beer enthusiasts can enjoy a diverse selection of local and international brews, ciders, and wine.
Activities and games include a cornhole tournament, keg curling, stein holding and Hammerschlagen. Hammerschlagen is a game where participants compete against each other to drive nails into a wooden beam or stump. Each player gets one continuous swing at a nail per turn and if the nail is not driven flush into the log, then the hammer is passed to the next player.
During stein holding, competitors hold a full one-liter beer stein out in front of their bodies with a straight arm, parallel to the ground. Competitors go as long as they can and the last individual hoisting their stein is the winner.
Oktoberfest steins and drink tickets can be purchased in advance on the Chamber of Commerce website for $20 at www. visitpriestriver.com/ oktoberfest or the day of the event at the Chamber booth.
