Priest River shuts out Medical Lake

MEDICAL LAKE – The Priest River Spartan football team racked up its second consecutive shutout last Friday, blanking Medical Lake 43-0 at Medical Lake.

“I am extremely proud of our team’s performance. It was a true collective effort, with meaningful contributions from every player,” coach Alex Zepeda says. “Offensively, we distributed the ball effectively across the field, making it difficult for the opposing defense to adjust. Defensively, we secured a shutout and added a fumble recovery for a touchdown, while our special teams excelled with a kickoff return for a touchdown. Overall, it was a well-rounded performance.”

Nate Ferget had a good game, recovering two fumbles, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Ferget scored a second TD on a pass from quarterback Lucas Mathews. Layton Goins returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.

Senior running back Sawyer Staudt continued to be a scoring machine for the Spartans. He scored three total touchdowns in the game carrying the ball 19 times for 92 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 21 yards, including one for a TD.

Ferget rushed for 58 yards on four carries, Mathews gained six yards on one carry, Colton Kuprienko carried once for nine yards, Goins carried once for seven yards.

Mathews completed nine of 19 passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Staudt with two passes for 21 yards and the TD, Colton Kuprienko caught three for 16 yards, Layton Goins caught one pass for nine yards, Lucas Simcox caught one for six yards and Ian Lamanna caught one for 18 yards.

Goins led the Spartans on defense, with eight tackles. Niki Porinchok was also a defensive force, with seven tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble for the Spartans. Ferget also had seven tackles. Skyler Simcox and Brady Hatten had six tackles each, Donovan Baldwin and Gavin Griesemer five tackles each. Griesemer and Gunnar Eversole also combined for a sack.

Priest River next hosts Colfax Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
