Chili cook-off Oct. 21

METALINE FALLS – The Annual American Legion Post #144 Chili Cook Off is Monday, Oct. 21. Entry is 4-5 p.m. and the top three chilis will win cash prizes. Judging and dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and the meal includes cornbread and dessert. The event is open to members and guests and a $10 donation is suggested.

The American Legion Post is located at 220 E. 4th Ave. in Metaline Falls.

Fall Barn Dance this Saturday

NEWPORT – There will be a Fall Barn Dance Saturday, Oct. 12, 5-9:30 p.m. at the Hitchin’ Barn, located at 26504 Jefferson Rd., Newport. The event is open to all ages and will feature line dance lessons, DJ requests, social dancing and live music with the Tamarack Ridge Band. There will also be a fire pit, horseshoe pit and lawn games. People are encouraged to pack a picnic. Hard alcohol is prohibited.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with the first line dance lesson at 5 p.m. The second lesson is 6 p.m. Live music and dancing is from 7-9:30 p.m.

Tickets for admission only are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Admission plus dance class tickets is $20 presale and $25 at the door. Children ages 6-12 get in for $5 and admission for children ages zero to five is free. Cash only if paying at the door.

Walking club meets Thursdays, Saturdays

CUSICK – The walking club meets next Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Calispel Valley Library, located at 107 S. 1st Ave. in Cusick from 9-10 a.m. Anyone is welcome to join. It might be cold, it might be hot, it might rain, possibly all in a single walk. Dress in layers and wear shoes that can get muddy.

Meet at the Calispel Valley Library book drop to walk, talk, enjoy the wildlife and keep fit. Pets on leashes are welcome. If new to the area this is a great way to meet people. Bring a camera and binoculars.

Eagles and other feathered friends as well as the occasional beaver are out and about along the river and make for photo opportunities.

The group meets every Thursday and Saturday when the library is open, weather permitting.
