NEWPORT – The Newport High School girls’ soccer team split last week between a loss against Reardan at a home game on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and a triumph over Kettle Falls at an away game Thursday, Oct. 3.
The Lady Grizzlies lost to the Reardan’s Screaming Eagles 7-2 with Newport’s Ella Monk scoring at 25th minute into the game. Monk would go to score Newport’s other goal with an assist by Joelle Brandtner at the 68th minute. Newport had 14 shots on goal to Reardan’s 23 and Newport goalkeeper Emily Hoffman had 14 saves. Reardan had five.
Newport went on to success last Thursday against the Kettle Falls Bulldogs, wining 5-0. The Grizzlies blocked the Bulldogs out with Ella Monk making the first goal with assist from Lucy Bowen. Bowen assisted Brandtner next, followed by another assist with Monk and then another with Holly Waterman for the fourth goal. Monk come back unassisted to score the fifth and final goal of the game.
Newport was continually on the attack with 25 shots on goal to Kettle Falls’ 10. Hoffman thwarted all 10 of those attempts and Kettle Falls had 12 saves.
Newport traveled to Northwest Christian for a game Tuesday, Oct. 8 after deadline. Results from that event will be in next week’s newspaper. Up next the Grizzlies will host Upper Columbia Academy Thursday, Oct. 10, then it’s off to Freeman for a game Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Both games start at 4 p.m.
