NEWPORT – Greg Hitchcock is the latest addition to the staff at The Miner newspapers. Hitchock, 57, was hired as associate editor in March.
Most recently Hitchcock worked at the Sidney Herald daily newspaper Sidney, Montana, located on the North Dakota border.
He has also worked at the Leader Herald daily newspaper in Gloversville, New York and the Cambridge Eagle, a weekly newspaper in Cambridge, New York.
“Greg is proving to be a valuable asset in our newsroom. The stories he’s already written for our readers have been in-depth, informative and well-written. He’s a pleasure to be around and we think he’ll go far in our community. We’re lucky to have him,” Miner publisher/owner Michelle Nedved said.
Hitchcock has a 1992 bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Albany in Albany New York.
He was raised in New York and joined the U.S. Army right after graduating high school. He took basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey and followed up with training in electronics at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. He went on to work at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.
Hitchcock has a number of interests. He’s a published writer, recently returning from the Los Angeles Book Fair, where he promoted his self-published book “Stories of Stigma: How to Overcome Shame to Live a Healthy Life.”
In addition, he makes videos, paints, writes poetry and studied theater in college.
For fun, Hitchcock enjoys reading, art and singing.
“I like karaoke,” Hitchcock says. During his move to Newport, Hitchcock injured his left hand in an unfortunate cat-crate incident, so he’s been a one-handed reporter since arriving – quite the feat, especially taking photos.
“It has been quite a journey to get here,” Hitchcock said. “Moving from New York to Montana to Washington is the best move I made. I love writing and reporting although it has its challenges, especially being one handed right now.”
