PRIEST RIVER – Coming off a three set loss to Grangeville Saturday, the Priest River girls volleyball team prepares for districts, which start Friday.
Grangeville won 25-20, 25-15, 25-15. “We just couldn’t collectively find the energy,” Priest River coach Kaitlyn Ward says. “We had good moments not great ones.”
She said there is a fresh start at districts. At Spirit Lake against Timberlake Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Spartans got a five set win, winning the first set 25-17, losing the next two 25-15, 25-23 before coming back to tie it in the fourth set with a 25-22 win. The Spartans took the tie breaker 15-13.
“We had to shift some players due to an injury,” Ward says. She said Payton Yount had a good game.
“Paityn killed it outside,” Ward says. “She was an attacking machine.”
Yount was the leading hitter for Priest River with 10, followed by Desi Humphrey with eight. Jayda Storro and Aleigh Jensen each served a pair of aces. Jensen was the leading blocker with three, Storro had 22 assists and Toni Marinello had 22 digs.
Monday night, the Spartans played Bonners Ferry, losing in five sets. Priest River won the first two 25-23, 25-23, lost the next two 25-23, 25-19 and the tiebreaker 15-7.
“Our team played very hard,” Ward says. “We had multiple girls with kills, digs and assists. It was a full team effort all night. We are on our way to peak at districts!”
Priest River plays St Marie’s at 10 a.m. Friday in Kellogg.
