Spartan boys get first district soccer win
POST FALLS – The Priest River Spartans boys soccer team got their first ever win at the district tournament, beating Orofino 1-0 Monday, Oct. 14.
Priest River scored in the 63rd minute when Cameron Howell scored.
That put the Spartans in a semi-finals game with league leading Coeur d’Alene Charter Tuesday after the newspaper went to press. A win will send the Spartans to state in soccer for the first time.
ACH stays undefeated, beats Cusick 69-30
WILBUR – The Cusick Panthers football team went up against an undefeated Almira/Coulee- Hartline team Friday, losing 69-30. Friday, Oct. 18, the Panthers (2-1, 2-3) go to Republic (1-3, 1-5) for a game that starts at 7 p.m.
Monk, Hinchcliff, Bowen score in Newport soccer losses
NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzles girls soccer team played twice last week, losing both matches.
Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Grizzlies went to Northwest Christian, where they lost 10-1. Lucy Bowen scored Newport’s goal. Newport took five shots on goal while Northwest Christian had 21. Newport’s goal keeper Emily Hoffman had 11 saves.
Against Upper Columbia Academy Thursday, Oct. 10, Newport was competitive in the 5-3 loss. UCA scored first in the 16th minute. Ella Monk scored for Newport in the 25th minute. Four minutes later UCA scored again at the 29th minute, followed by a score in the 34th minute.
Monk answered for Newport with her second goal at the 36th minute. The score was 3-2 at the half.
UCA scored early in the second half at the 43rd minute. Marri Hinchcliff scored for Newport in the 56th minute to bring the game back to a one score difference. In the 76th minute, UCA scored their last goal to take the win 5-3.
Newport played at Freeman Tuesday after the newspaper went to press. They will host Freeman Thursday, Oct. 15 and travel to Davenport Tuesday, Oct. 22.
