FREEMAN – The Lady Grizzlies soccer team took it on the chin last week after an 11-0 loss to the Freeman Scotties Tuesday, Oct. 15. Rylee Russell scored six goals, and the Scotties (10-0, 7-0) beat the visiting Grizzlies (1-6, 0-4) in the 2B game.
“Last week’s game against Freeman, like it always tends to be, was a huge battle mentally and physically,” coach Laura Verity says. “Freeman always has a very strong girls soccer team, and this year is no different, with them currently sitting at a the number one ranking for the state.”
Verity adds that the Grizzly defense and goalkeeper tried their best to contain the Scotties and in the second half Newport was more effective at that than in the first half. Verity cited players Emily Hoffman, Ellie Whitehouse, Joelle Brandtner, Emily Brown, Makenzie Geaudreau, and Marri Hinchliff as leaders in defense.
Next up Newport travels to Davenport for a game on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. Then it’s off to Reardan Thursday, Oct. 24 for a game at 6 p.m. Newport will host Kettle Falls Tuesday, Oct. 29 and Northwest Christian Thursday, Oct. 31. Both games start at 4 p.m.
