COLFAX – Grizzly cross-country runners Olivia Collins and William Rheinford are headed to state after qualifying at the 1B/2B NEA Regional Meet at the Colfax Golf Club on Friday, Nov. 1. Collins, a freshman, finished in 25th place with a time of 22:30.22, qualifying her to be one of the top 31 girls to go to state.
“Anytime a freshman qualifies for state it is a big deal and relatively rare, so we are really proud of Olivia,” Newport coach Morgan Johnson says. “I am also very proud of all the athletes and the effort they have put forth; coaching them has been an honor.”
Rheinford, a junior, was the top finishing Newport boy placing 31st with a time of 19:29.50. Top 21 go to state for boys.
Johnson says the conditions for Regionals were cold and wet with a high of 44-degrees and light rain, which created some muddy spots on the flat course.
Collin’s classmate Sophia Peaker finished 49th with a time of 24:31.22.
Sophomore Aurelia Johnson had a major personal record (PR) of 27:59.7, shaving three minutes off her previous PR.
St. Georges took first in the region with 57 points for the boys and 44 points for the girls.
