Grizzlies shine at Barry Sartz Memorial track meet

NEWPORT – The Newport track and field team hosted the Barry Sartz Memorial Relays, with several first-place efforts.

“The relays are always a great way to honor Barry, everyone had a lot of fun and there were some good performances,” Newport coach Levi Litowitz says. “This event was always about the comradery and competition that comes with Track and Field and no one knew that more than Barry and we are always proud to host these relays.”

Taigen Mitcham had a good day on the boys’ side, winning the shot put, running on the winning 4X100 relay team along with Aidan Kramer, Anthony Hoffman and Jacksen Croswhite, as well as on the sprint medley relay team. He ran the sprint medley relay with Hoffman, Crosswhite and Damien Haberg.

Hamberg also did well. In addition to the sprint medley relay, he won the high jump and place third in the triple jump. Ronan Sherman won the discus and took second in the javelin and shot put.

For the girls, Joelle Brandtener won the long jump and the triple jump and Dusty McDaniel won the discus and placed third in the shot put.

Both the girls’ team and the boys’ team had third place finishes. Riverside won both the girls’ and boys’ team competitions.

The Northeast A District Championships get underway Saturday, May 18 at Riverside.
