NEWPORT – Grizzly volleyball continued its winning streak last week with a 3-2 victory against Upper Columbia Academy Friday, Nov. 1 in the pig-tail games to get to districts. In the first game the Lions won 26-25, followed by a 30-28 retaliation from Newport in the second game. In the third game UCA won by 26-24, but the Lady Grizzlies maintained dominance for the next two games, winning 25-18 in the fourth game and 15-13 in the fifth.

Lindsay Collison had 15 kills and Sammi Tellessen had 36 assists. Grace Keck had 29 digs and Collison had six blocks, with Tellessen getting three aces.

Newport started its winning momentum earlier last week, beating St. George’s 3-2 at the Senior Night home game Tuesday, Oct. 29. Newport won the first game 25-7 and did an almost repeat in the second game, winning 25-10. St. George’s got the lead in the third and fourth games, winning 26-24 and 25-18, respectively. The Grizzlies came back in the fifth game, beating the Dragons 15-12.

Collison and Kaylia Earl each had 16 kills and senior Tellessen had 39 assists. Earl got 30 digs, Collison and Tellessen had three blocks and Tellessen had four aces.

Newport (5-7, 7-9) headed to the NE2B Districts, Rounds 1 and 2 Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Cheney High School after the newspaper deadline. Results for that game will be in next week’s edition. Depending on the outcome, Newport will compete at the NE2B District Finals Thursday, Nov. 7, also at Cheney.
