What Happened to My Country?

Things were simpler growing up as a boy, We would play outside and use a stick as a toy. We would listen to our parents an obey what they said, We come home for dinner and wash up before bed. We would say our prayers before going to sleep, We would dream of tomorrow and what we wanted to be.

We would go to school and interact with our friends, We were taught by our teachers as a means to an end. As we grew older our discussions became more advanced, We would ask questions about government and what it enhanced.

We would give our opinions and listen to others without objection, We wondered if political policies were heading us in the right direction. The reporting of the media was something we could trust, Their stories were open and transparent like a pie without crust.

But as media corporations grew larger and more money was to be made, Opinions were presented as facts as those in charge would hide in the shade. The truth became deceptive and difficult to recognize, When it came time to vote for a candidate the people became disenfranchised.

We are now at a point where we have hostility and division, The time has come to respect other opinions, like our forefathers.
