Spartans do well at Newport meet, win Wallace

NEWPORT – The Priest River Spartans track and field team came away from the Wallace small school meet Tuesday, April 23 with a team win for the boys and girls. Friday the team went to Lakeland and to the Barry Sartz Memorial in Newport Saturday.

The Spartans had a long week with three meets over five days, Spartan coach Jared Hughes says. Tuesday at Wallace was added to replace a dual meet cancelled by St. Maries and Kellogg. He says it was a good chance for the team to see different competition and for the younger kids to earn some team points. Priest River went to Timberlake Friday and Newport Saturday to mimic a two-day meet. “It was tough on the kids, but they needed to see what it would be like when we will travel to St. Maries on back-to-back days for districts in two weeks.”

At Wallace, Carter Korff was a three-event winner, taking the 100-meter race, the long jump and the triple jump. Rebecca Sedbrook won two events, the shot put and discus. Niki Porinchok also took two events, the shot put and discus.

All four Spartan boys’ relay teams won first and Brayden Lamanna won the 800-meter race.

For the girls Haylee Jepson won the 300-meter hurdles, Ashlynn Korff took the long jump, and Kylee Swoboda won the high jump.

At Newport, Ian Lamanna won the pole vault with a 10feet, 6-inch effort. For the girls, Chase Smith won the javelin with a 93-feet, 9-inch throw.

Hughes says several athletes added to or improved on their place in the Spartan Track and Field all-time top 10 list. Sophomore Gavin Griesmer added to his school record set last week by improving to 136-feet, 4 inches. Freshman Jasmine Stark improved her personal record by a foot in the pole vault to move up to third. Lizzie McCracken continues her assault on PRs as she now moves into 7th in the 800-meters. She is close in the 1,600-meters as well moving up to 11th. Kylee Swoboda had a great high jump day on Tuesday jumping 5-feet to move to 7th. :”She has been very close for a long time and it was awesome to see her break the 5-foot barrier,” Hughes says. Rebecca Sedbrook also is knocking on the top ten list with a huge PR of 102-feet, 10-inches in the discus at 11th.

Priest River will take a select group to Post Falls Thursday, May 3, for the District 1 Meet of Champions. The top 16 entries in each individual event and top eight relays qualify for the meet, which will get underway at 2:30 p.m.
