ONALASKA – The Newport High School football team’s advancement toward state was stopped by Onalaska after the Loggers secured a 60-8 victory over the Grizzlies at the first round of the 2B playoffs Friday, Nov. 15.
“Well, we ran into a very good team on Friday,” Newport coach Mark Duxbury says. “We didn’t have any answers for them on either side of the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if Onalaska makes it to the State Finals. They are big, fast, and have 14 seniors on the team.”
Onalaska got on the scoreboard with a 32-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, followed by another four plays that got the Loggers up to a 22-point lead.
Newport’s Brody Driver completed an 86-yard kickoff return that resulted in a touchdown that got the Grizzlies six points. Nate Shaw converted a three-yard pass from Hank Kirkwood into a two-point conversation, making it 22-8.
The Loggers continued to gain yardage, shutting Newport out for the remainder of the game.
Duxbury has nothing but praise for his team and their efforts.
“We are still proud of our team and what they were able to accomplish this season,” Duxbury says. “We’ll get back into the weight room and work on our strength and agility until next season.”
Newport team members that made the All-League selections are as follows: Offense – Hank Kirkwood, First Team Flex Player, Brody Driver, Second Team Running Back, Ares Swain, Second Team Offensive Lineman, and Defense – Ares Swain First Team Defensive Lineman.
