PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River Spartan boys’ basketball team started the season with wins over Genesis Prep and Newport, beating Genesis Prep 65-42 and Newport 65-43.
Against Genesis Prep Wednesday, Dec. 4, the Spartans started slow, trailing 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. They turned that around in the second quarter, outscoring Genesis 20-9, to take a 31-23 lead at the half.
The Spartans never trailed after that. Priest River’s Brock Kreager led scoring with 21 points, including a half dozen 3-pointers. Nate Stifel scored 12 points.
Against Newport Saturday, the Spartans started strong and led throughout, spreading the scoring around, with four players scoring in double figures. Parker Coleman and Ian Lamanna led Spartan scoring with 12 points each. Lamanna hit four 3-pointers. Stifel scored 11 points and Sawyer Staudt had 10 points.
The Spartans play at home game against Coeur du Christ Academy Wednesday, Dec. 11. The game starts at 6 p.m.
Priest River goes to Genesis Prep for a rematch Thursday, Dec. 12. That game starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, the Spartans go to Orofino for a game that starts at 3 p.m.
