Spartan boys dominating

PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River Spartans boys basketball team has started their season in a dominating fashion. They’re undefeated so far, winning their first games with a mix of 3-pointers and a stifling defense.

The Spartans have downed Newport 65-43, Couer du Christ 79-49, Genesis Prep 52-45 and Orofino 66-59.

14. The Spartans trailed the first quarter, then exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Orofino 16-8 to go up 34-24 at the half. The game was tight the rest of the way, with the Spartans holding on for the win.

Nate Stifel led Priest River scorers with 19 points, the only Spartan to score in double figures. Carter Cook led in rebounding with11 boards.

Priest River beat Coeur du Christ at home Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Stifel led Spartan scoring with 14 points and Palmer Coleman scored 10 points, as did Madden Redinger. Priest River led start to finish, up 36-22 at the half and capping the game with a 22-5 fourth quarter.

In a road game against Genesis Prep last Thursday, Sawyer Staudt led the Spartans with 20 points, including a half dozen 3-pointers. Down by five points at the end of the first quarter Priest River clamped down in the second, holding Genesis to two points. Priest River took a 23-18 lead into the halftime break.

Genesis came back in the third quarter to pull within two points, but the Spartans finished strong, finishing the game with a 17-12 final quarter to get the win.

Priest River goes to Kellogg for a game 7 p.m. game Thursday, Dec. 19, then to Sandpoint the next night, Friday, Dec. 20 for a game at 7 p.m.
