YOUR OPINION

Common sense is not common

To the editor, Glen Pierce, tell the Newport Miner readers you’re a Fox News devotee without telling readers you’re a Fox News devotee!

Lies are still lies even when people believe them. The truth is still the truth even if some don’t believe the truth.

Apparently you’ve managed to whitewash the Trump 01/06/2021 insurrection that most of Americans watched on network TV, not on Fox. What about his plan to submit fake electors? You didn’t hear about that?

I’m sure you’re expecting Trump to enable retribution against his perceived enemies, be careful what you wish for.

His cabinet picks are beyond inept. You must be proud that Musk bought his way into the presidency.

The trouble with Common Sense is it’s so uncommon. I almost feel sorry for your bent mind.

Media matters

To the editor, Beyond everyday wrap-up smear campaigns, Media Matters has become an organizational hit team bent on annihilating a political target’s career. Ever since its donors switched to Democrats around 2013, the targets have been right-leaning; left-leaning personalities guilty of similar acts are generously overlooked.

Since everyone slips up some time, it’s simply a matter of lying in wait for an opportunity to escalate that slip into a career-ending scandal.

In her book, “The Smear,” Sharyl Attkisson documents how Media Matters developed a tried-and-true formula for their devastating take-downs.

Step One: Launch. Within hours of the commission of a slip, they publish a video clip with a headline designed to inflame.

Step Two: Distribution. An accompanying “news story” of pure propaganda is emailed to hundreds of “reporters” who gratefully run with it, relieving them from having to do any work.

Step Three: Outreach. The heads of like-minded organizations are personally contacted to whip up outrage and further the smear.

Step Four: Escalation. Mainstream media outlets pick up the story and report it as “news,” thereby transforming a bit of gossip into a national controversy. Their click-bait headlines are designed to be inflammatory.

Step Five: Demands. Media Matters and its advocates demand and receive an apology from the offender – not for the purpose of ending the controversy, but to force an admission of guilt with which to exert further pressure.

Step Six: Pressure. Media Matters turns up the pressure by calling to end the targeted person’s career. They continue to blast rapid-fire follow-up stories. They condemn and smear anyone daring to stand up for the target. They persuade advertisers to pull their commercials from sympathetic media outlets.

The result? A casual remark, often said as an offhanded joke, has been successfully escalated into career-ending national outrage: modern “journalism” at work.

Trump will go down as worst president ever, twice

To the editor, Yesterday after spending time listening to a man tell me that Donald Trump was a great President, he was great for our country, he had nothing to do with January 6, no police officers died, only peaceful people, and Dr. Fauci caused COVID I could feel my blood pressure rising.

It seems that the Republican people do not remember COVID, and how it started and how was spread. It wasn’t by Dr Fauci.

This was a worldwide pandemic.

Republicans don’t know that now nothing happened everything was fine. When grocery store shelves were almost empty in so many areas that’s fine. Some people were dying and there was no room in the morgue so they had to store bodies in the refrigerated semi trucks. I watched on January 6th like millions of other people did that day and heard Trump’s words “fight like hell we’re not going to have a country anymore.”

Trump’s going to go down in history as the worst president we’ve ever had twice, not once, twice. He has a clown posse for a cabinet. I am appalled and absolutely terrified of what kind of craziness these idiots are going to do from one day to the next.

Person of the Year

To the editor, Well, Trump started with a mugshot and now Time Magazine has named him ‘Person of the Year.’ Libs of TikTok put it best with his mugshot alongside the cover of Time Magazine: ‘How it started’ (mugshot), How it’s going’ (cover of Time)’. Trump even rang the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange and chants of USA came up from the floor. First President since Reagan. This is why an overwhelming majority of Americans are optimistic about the future.

A recent survey shows Small Business optimism is now at a three year high since his victory.

America is looking forward.

Another Trump effect: remember when Trump said he wanted all the hostages released or else?

Hamas just handed over a list of hostages and concedes Israeli troops in Gaza. The world is lining up. For the first time in history, Christs Nativity is displayed at the Capitol in DC.

Argentina’s Javier Milei ends their country’s debt for the first time in 123 years. He did it in part by slashing his government by 60 to 70%. He eliminated his ‘bureaucracy.’ Coming soon to the US? Musk and Ramaswamy?

We are on the verge of WWIII.

Ukraine fired US missiles into Russia. We have just about crossed every line that Putin has drawn. Rep Thomas Massie (KY) says that the US orchestrated the take down of Syria. Assad is in Moscow. Al Qaeda is now running Syria. Who is in charge of our nuclear codes?

The DOJ released its J6 report.

It turns out that the FBI had at least 26 planted informants in the crowd. The report showed four entered the Capitol and 13 entered access restricted areas.

At least two were paid by the FBI. None were charged.

Rural communities will lose federal support

To the editor, Since 68% of our community voted for more government efficiency in the form of Trump’s DOGE effort led by a couple of billionaires, let’s get started. How will DOGE affect our community? Possibly end the USPS mail in the North part of our county. Delivering mail way up there is very inefficient. Even UPS uses the Postal Service as it isn’t economical for them to deliver to remote locations. The state and county could follow the DOGE approach and stop fixing the roads and bridges and stop snow plowing the roads that have only a few homes per mile.

We are always quick to point out that the government is wasteful and bloated and in need of efficiency. When guardrails appeared on certain county roads, I discovered that the rails were installed using funds from a federal highway safety act.

In fact, many federal grants and programs have funded our community for years. I assume that voters wanted that kind of spending to stop to save money that can be used to pay for more tax cuts.

Rural communities have spoken with their votes, and they will be losing many federal government services and programs if DOGE is implemented.

My thought is that the federal government funded crop insurance for farmers and disaster relief will be cut.

The federal government house was built a long time ago. Think of remodeling it while you are living in it. It isn’t going to be pleasant to experience. Clearly rural voters don’t like the house they are living in. The truth is that they have been living in it for long time and voters in cities have been subsidizing our lifestyle with their taxes. This county didn’t pay for the recent paving of US-2.

Reality could be on the way.
