NEWPORT - Firefighters had to struggle getting their equipment up to a house fire on Diamond View Road Monday, Dec. 16.

Heavy snowfall and icy roads hampered efforts and rendered many fire apparatus stuck or unable to make it to the scene, South Pend Oreille Fire & Rescue announced in a news release.

The home of Deborah and James Jalving was destroyed.

First arriving crews started an aggressive exterior and interior attack and fought to save the home and various outbuildings and vehicles. Even with the challenging conditions, crews were able to keep the fire to the building of origin, though the residence was a near total loss.

The family has a GoFundMe Request under Fire Relief: Assist James and Deborah Now.

In the GoFundMe page Deborah Jalving said her husband is a cardiac patient and all the family’s possessions were destroyed in the fire, including his medications.

The couple is in touch with Red Cross for assistance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries. SPOFR thanked their mutual aid partners Spokane Fire District 4 and Pend Oreille Fire District 4, as well as Pend Oreille County for bringing in sand and clearing a path for SPOFR trucks.
