Wheeler to resign temporaily
SANDPOINT — Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler announced Sunday he had resigned from his position but intends to return to the role in January 2025, the Bonner County Daily Bee reported.
According to a letter submitted to Bonner County commissioners and shared with the Daily Bee, Wheeler will file for retirement benefits before beginning his fifth term as sheriff Jan. 13, 2025. “I am required to be separated from county employment for 30 days to be eligible to receive those benefits,” the Bee reported Wheeler wrote in the letter. Wheeler told commissioners that according to Idaho Code 31-2806, Undersheriff Ror Lakewold will temporarily fill the vacancy.
In the 2024 general election, Wheeler ran unopposed.
Once he is sworn in, Wheeler’s upcoming term will expire in January 2029.
