Coroner death investigations going to Spokane medical examiner
NEWPORT – All new coroner and death investigations, previously handled by the Pend Oreille County Prosecutor’s Office, will now be handled by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, starting Jan. 1.
Pend Oreille County Prosecutor Dolly Hunt announced in a news release that the transition is because of statutory changes.
“This transition is a result of a change in legislation related to the coroner function and is aimed at enhancing efficiency and compliance with new legal requirements,” according to the news release. All inquiries should now be directed to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Spokane Street in Spokane. People can still contact the Pend Oreille County Prosecutor’s Office about deaths prior to Jan. 1.
The Pend Oreille County Prosecutor has by statute served as the ex officio Pend Oreille County Coroner and has fulfilled this role for decades.
Wiz Quiz contest returns
NEWPORT – Selkirk Alliance for Science challenges people to exercise their scientific knowledge with the annual Wiz Quiz contest.
No purchase is necessary to enter or win the contest.
Beginning Jan. 6 and continuing through the month, a new science question will be posted on the SAS website contest page each Monday at 8 a.m. Contestants may only submit one answer per questions. All correct answers received before the following Monday will be entered into a drawing for a free science pocket guide.
At the end of each week, the correct answer will be posted on the website, then notify the winner for details to mail their prize. If a question id not correctly answered before the following Monday, the answer and source will be posted to the website and the question retired with no winner.
At the end of the contest all contestants who answered correctly but didn’t win a weekly prize will be entered into a drawing for a free science book.
