Injuries, grades hurt Newport

NEWPORT – Newport baseball ended the season with five wins and 11 losses. The Grizzlies started strong winning against Lind-Ritzville/Sprague in a doubleheader (14-2, 16-8) on March 19 and at Riverside on March 26 (4-3).

However, they began losing games and except for a doubleheader against Priest River winning 17-0 and 17-3 on April 2 in a home game, Newport finished the season with five wins and 11 losses overall, their league standing with one win and 11 losses.

Thad Trepanier, Newport baseball coach, says the season was challenging mostly due to absent ball players: “This season was quite challenging due to only 18 boys coming out to play. Then you take injuries and grades into account and suddenly, we had 11 eligible players,” he says. “So, we have to take care of things in the classroom first and foremost in the future if we want to have success.”

Trepanier says the team is losing a couple seniors that helped greatly in William Shaw and Colton Seeber. “We just need to keep working and grinding when it comes to baseball, we have some kids with a great deal of experience, but we also had three kids who started for us that had never played the game before this season.” Trepanier says. “In order to improve, we have to find an excuse to work on our craft everyday throughout the summer and offseason, somehow and some way.”
