COLBERT – Grizzly wrestlers were almost constantly on the mats last week, starting with a home dual against Reardan on Jan. 7 and culminating with the Crusader Classic in Colbert Saturday, Jan. 11.
Senior Roman Tannehill, 285 pounds, won his first three matches, starting with an 11-1 major decision, winning the second by a pin, and the third in a 3-2 tie breaker. He ended up coming in second place in the championship round.
Kenny Owens, 215, fell in the fifth consolation round, but he won his opening match with a pin in 11 seconds flat. The junior lost to an Almira Coulee Hartline opponent in the second round but responded with back-to-back pins in his next two matches.
Freshman Gavvin Carter, 157, closed out his first opponent in a 7-0 decision and controlled his second match with a 15-1 technical fall. In a reversed scenario, he lost his final match due to a tech fall.
Newport ended up taking eighth place in the Crusader Classic, finishing with a score of 84 and beating out 12 other teams. Okanagan ended up with the team title, beating Deer Park 298-204.5.
Earlier last week Newport traveled to Lakeside for a dual, where sophomore Hunter Coe, 120-pounds, scored several team points with a swift pin. Cody Andrea, 126, pinned his opponent and Tyson Nunley, 132, won by technical fall.
Lakeside ended up winning overall with a final score of 42-28.
Newport hosted Reardan on Tuesday, Jan. 7, winning overall with a 60-12 team score. Tannehill, Owens, Carter, Coe, Andrea, Nunley, Robert Warren, Nate Shaw, Parker Warren and Harlen Anderson all won their matches.
Newport hosted Kettle Falls Tuesday, Jan. 14 after the newspaper went to print. The Grizzlies travel to Northwest Christian again Tuesday, Jan. 21 for a dual at 6 p.m.
