To the editor, Glen Pierce asked, “What is the common denominator”? Answer: Internet alternative news and social media. Those are Glen’s sources for his misinformation about the LA fires.
Let’s start with Glen’s DEI claims about the LA Fire Department. He assumes that the deciding qualification for LA Fire Chief is being a lesbian woman. As if a man and a woman have similar qualifications and the city picked the woman over the man because she was a female lesbian. Why not take Glen’s insult and apply it to any female in our local government and say the only reason they are in their position is that they are females or DEI hires. The assumption is that women are inferior in ability vs. a man. You know, when America was great, and women were kept in their place.
Glen calls firefighters “firemen,” a term the fire service discarded long ago because firemen are railroad workers who shovel coal into the boilers of steam engines. Glen said there was no water in the fire hydrants and that one reservoir was empty disregarding the full reservoirs. The grain of truth is microscopic with Glen’s claims.
Having fought some large fires, I can say that pressure in water mains can be very low when the firefighting demand exceeds the supply. No water in the hydrant is usually caused by a closed underground supply valve or a broken stem inside the hydrant.
Glen listed only negative comments he took from his misinformation sources and nothing positive about the efforts of thousands of firefighters and support personnel saving lives and property. Glen manages to mix all his Trumpisms with a natural disaster.
Finally, Glen claims Trump’s conviction was an abuse of our legal system. The real abuse is Trump getting a different brand of justice than other citizens.

Can’t accept the results
To the editor, Observing Mr. Scobby’s comments last week just goes to show us that Trump Derangement Syndrome is not curable. Pete is accepting of the results of a bitter, incompetent outgoing President. I’m not sure why he would want a continuation of the Biden/Harris disastrous administration.
As for the California fire situation, why shouldn’t the failed leadership of Gavin Newsome be pointed out? He has had several years of experience watching fires burn all over California. What was his state fire emergency plan? Obviously L.A.’s mayor had no plan except for cutting funding to the fire department. No one can expect the high winds that they had, but all the fires did not start at once. If they could have isolated the early fire with profuse concentration of resources maybe things would have turned out different. As it stands there have been over 25 deaths and well over 100,000 displaced residents and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed.
If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

Should PUD move warehouses?
To the editor, With new PUD Commissioners now is a good time to let them know your opinion regarding the three blocks of warehouse in downtown Newport.
Do you think the warehouse should be moved out into the county and allow the City of Newport to grow its retail business.
