NEWPORT – The Pend Oreille Conservation District is holding a workshop in preparation for its Annual Plant Sale.
POCD’s Planting Native Species workshop is designed to help community members, including those buying plants at the Annual Plant Sale, learn the best practices for planting and project design. The workshop is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 5 at the Camas Center in Usk, on Earth Day weekend.
This year’s workshop gives a comprehensive look at topics essential for a successful planting season.
Local specialists will discuss weed management strategies to identify, control and prevent the spread of invasive species that threaten native plants. And attendees will learn how to prepare and improve soil to promote healthy growth and water retention, as well as techniques for handling bareroot seedlings and live cuttings, including proper storage, planting and care.
The workshop will also cover riparian planting project design, providing insights into planning and executing restoration projects that improve water quality and create habitat for wildlife.
POCD is partnering with the Creative Arts District to participate in their Earth Day Artwalk, which will be in the park next to POCD’s office at 121 N. Washington Ave. in Newport. After the workshop, attendees can see eco-themed art displays, plant seedlings with children and more at the art walk.
Registration is not required for the workshop, but to receive updates and additional information, email POCD communications manager Stephen Allen.
Pre-sale of plants is available on POCD’s website at pocd.org and closes at the end of January.
