Fourth year for Pend Oreille County event

NEWPORT – This year marks the fourth Men on Fire event, started by Jason and Beth McQuinn, owners of Bear Paw Camp and Event Center located north of Newport on LeClerc Road on the Pend Oreille River. The event takes place from 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.

The McQuinns were inspired to put on Men on Fire and Women on Fire when they purchased the camp in 2018 out of a vision to equip and empower men and women in the church, says Beth McQuinn.

The event features Christian speakers, various events such as the Studs and Spuds target shooting and even a comedian.

“Jason tries to keep the men engaged through the breakouts and activities throughout the weekend such as our comedian, Brett Hollis, performing Thursday night,” Beth says. The “studs ‘n spuds” breakout is for men to target shoot potatoes launched over the river.

This year Men on Fire has been expanded to four days, up from three. About 250 men are expected to attend. They can attend for the full four days, with or without accommodations, for one day or even to hear just one speaker, Beth says. There are a variety of speakers and events.

“We bring Dr. Dean Neary in to speak on men’s health,” Beth says. Master hunter John Kinssies and his son are putting on an elk-calling session and getting men excited about the outdoors. Friday night is the Beast Feast, which will contain a variety of exotic meats that have been smoked to perfection by Joe Kokinda.

“Our speakers have been chosen out of a desire to challenge the men mentally and spiritually in their Christian walk,” Beth says. “Ministry is also a powerful focus of the weekend besides the lifelong and deep bonds these men form throughout the weekend.”

Since the McQuinns started the event at Bear Paw Camp, Men on Fire events have spread to other locations in Washington, Montana and Tennessee, with a church in Alaska also expressing interest in hosting their own Men on Fire event.

Speakers include Russell Johnson of Pursuit NW, Vlad Savchuk of Hungry Gen, Joey Zamora from Cornerstone in the Tri-Cities, Joel Ramsey of Citipointe in Nashville and Brian Jennings from the Breakthrough Church in Union Gap, Washington.

New this year is JO of Heart of the City in Coeur d’Alene, who does some fire-stoking preaching of the gospel, Beth says.

Worship this year is led by Citipointe Nashville with Guest Worship leader Ruben Mundo.

Beth invites men to come to Bear Paw Camp for a host of activities and breakouts led by men from across Washington and Idaho.

Men on Fire is exclusive to men, but there are women who volunteer behind the scenes. Registration on bearpawcamp. com closes Jan. 27.
