CUSICK - Responsible Growth * NE Washington will be sponsoring and partnering with Selkirk Alliance for Science, the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, and the Inatai Foundation Grant in an upcoming event to raise public awareness on preparedness and protection of area homes and families in the event of a catastrophic wildfire.
The ‘How to Protect your Families and Homes from Catastrophic Wildfires’ event will be held on Saturday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Camas Center located at 1821 North Leclerc Rd. #5. Fire protection and preparedness materials and presentations will be provided by the Washington Department of Natural Resource, U.S. Forest Service, Pend Oreille County Conservation District, Pend Oreille Emergency Management, Public Utilities District #1, South Pend Oreille County Fire & Rescue Unit, and the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Department.
No one must be reminded of the devastating Oregon Road wildfire that swept near Pend Oreille County lines in 2023. It burned 10,817 acres and more than 100 homes were destroyed. The January 2025, Los Angeles fires burned over 28,000 acres and wiped out whole communities destroying more that 12,000 homes, schools, businesses and other structures and taking 29 lives. Combustion, powerful winds and extreme dry conditions played a role in these wildfires.
