Grizzly girls ‘Bring Home Da Beef’
CHEWELAH - Newport wrestlers came out of the gate ready to grapple and took first place at the 2B North League Championships Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Jenkins High School in Chewelah. Hunter Coe won first place with a pin in the 120-pound weight category. Gavin Carter took first place by pin in the 150-pound bracket. Landen Pillers took home a first-place medal after finishing first in the 215-pound weight bracket by pinning teammate Connor McQuinn, who won runner-up.
“Gavin won a district championship, which is pretty cool for a freshman,” Newport wrestling coach Daniel Swain says. “A lot of our guys came in and beat ranked wrestlers who had competed at state.”
Preston Wacenske finished second in the 132-pound bracket, with Nathaniel Shaw winning second at 144 pounds. Other second place winers were Robert Warren, 175, and Ares Swain, 190. Roman Tannehill placed second in the 285 heavyweight category and Jaden Medrano was third. Tyson Nunley placed third in the 132-pound category.
Other teams that competed included Chewelah, Kettle Falls, Reardan, Northwest Christian and Davenport.
Lady Grizzlies had their own competition at the Bring Home Da Beef wrestling meet in Quincy Saturday, Feb. 1, with Payton Bennett winning first place in the 100-pound division with a pin. Alyssa Bays took fourth place in the 110-pound weight bracket.
“They all wrestled as if they had a vendetta against the girl they were wrestling with,” Newport girls’ wrestling coach Scott Pillers said. “We went against tough competition and these girls give it their all every time they go on the mat.”
Next up, the Grizzlies travel to Northwest Christian School in Colbert for the 2B League Wrestling Championships Saturday, Feb. 8 (TBA).
