CUSICK – The Cusick and Selkirk boys’ basketball teams both won key games played at Cusick Friday night, Jan. 31.

Cusick (13-6, 8-3) beat Chesterton Academy of Notre Dame 71-40 and Selkirk (10-11, 6-6) beat Odessa 75-60 Friday night at Cusick in first round games in the District 6 1B tournament.

Chesterton Academy (310, 2-7) and Odessa (6-12, 3-8) play in the Northeast 1B South League. Chesterton is located in Spokane.

Both Northeast 1B North League teams had their work cut out for them in the Tuesday night games, which took place after The Miner went to press. Cusick played defending state champion Wellpinit (14-2, 9-1) a quarterfinal game Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Wellpinit. Selkirk also played a quarterfinal game against Almira/Coulee-Hartline (17-1, 10-1) Feb. 4 at Coulee City.

Priest River girls beat Newport, fall to Grangeville

PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River girls basketball team beat Newport 42-22 in the Battle for the Border spirit game Friday, Jan. 31, then lost 61-30 to Grangeville in a Central Idaho League game the next night.

Against Newport, Lizzie McCracken led all scorers with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. She also blocked a shot and grabbed three rebounds in addition to getting three steals and an assist. Desi Humphrey scored 10 points.

Rebounding was led by Priest River’s Aleigh Jensen with 10 boards. She also had a pair of assists. Paityn Yount led all players with five assists to go with her six points.

For Newport, which struggled with Priest River’s defense, McDaniel led Grizzly scoring with nine points. She also got two steals and blocked a shot, as did Grace Parry, who led Grizzly rebounding with nine boards.

Grangeville (7-0, 14-6) leads the Central Idaho League. Priest River has a league record of 4-3 and an overall record of 12-6. Humphrey scored 13 points, including a 3-pointer and McCracken also hit a 3-pointer in her 9 points against Grangeville.

The Spartans next go to Kellogg for a game Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. They will have a district tournament play-in game at home Friday, Feb. 7 (TBA).

Nonresidents need hunting license to gather antlers in Idaho

BOISE - This time of year, shed hunters get excited about hitting the hills looking for antlers dropped by Idaho’s big game animals. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game remind people who are not legal Idaho residents that they are now required to purchase a nonresident Idaho license for hunting big game in order to legally pick-up antlers in Idaho. This new rule went into effect on July 1, 2024.
