NEWPORT – The Newport Grizzlies boys basketball team only won one of three games last week, but it was a key loser out game in which they trounced Upper Columbia Academy 75-48 at St. George’s High School that counted most. They led start to finish in a play-in game Saturday, Feb. 8.
That put them into the double elimination district tournament.
“I thought the guys executed offensively better,” Newport coach Brett Macey says. “It was nice to get that one out of the way and get into the double elimination portion.”
Monday, Feb. 10, they lost 74-46 to St. George’s at West Valley in Spokane Valley in the first round of ditricts.
Last week the Grizzlies lost 72-60 at home to Davenport Thursday, Feb. 6. A slow first half cost Newport. Outscored

by 10 points in the first half, the Grizzlies played much closer in the second half but couldn’t close the gap.
Hank Kirkwood led Newport scoring with 18 points. Austin Owen scored 14 and Zack Peone scored 12, including three 3-pointers.
Tuesday, Feb. 4, the Grizzlies lost to St.
George’s 68-41. Second and third quarters hurt Newport. They were outscored 22-9 in the second quarter and 21-2 in the third quarter. Peone led Grizzly scoring with 15 points.
Newport plays next Saturday Feb. 14 at West Valley at 3:30 p.m. against the loser of the game between Lind-Ritzville-Sprague and Freeman.
