Priest River girls still in state race

PRIEST RIVER – The Priest River girls basketball team (14-6) has had a great season, finishing second in the Central Idaho League with a 5-3 league record and getting to the title game for a district championship and a chance to go to state.

They lost that game 6933 to a strong Grangeville team Monday night, Feb. 10, in Grangeville, but still have a chance to get to state. The Spartans host No. 3 Kellogg Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. The winner of that game gets a play-in game for state.

Priest River must like their chances against Kellogg. After losing for years to the Wildcats, the Spartans have won three games against Kellogg this season.

They got their third win of the season against Kellogg Saturday night, Feb. 8, a 52-28 win at home. They also beat the Wildcats 34-25 Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Saturday, senior Desi Humphrey led all scorers with 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Fellow senior Paityn Yount hit two 3-pointers in her 13 points.

Spartan defense was effective, holding Kellogg to single digits in three of four quarters, including just three points in the fourth quarter.

Priest River had 13 steals, including four by Humphrey. Yount, Hailee Jepson-Church and Lizzie McCracken each had a pair of steals and McKinley Burgess-Duquette and Aleigh Jensen each had one.
