WEST VALLEY – The Newport girl’s basketball team lost 68-28 to Liberty, the No. 3 seeded team from the South conference of the Northeast 2B League, in a first-round district playoff game Monday, Feb. 10.
That put Newport, seeded No. 6, in a loser out game Saturday, Feb. 15, at West Valley in Spokane Valley.
Newport started slow but was competitive in the second quarter against Liberty. After getting outscored 14-6 in the first quarter, the Grizzlies rallied with an 11-point second quarter but was still down 31-17 at the half. Liberty stormed out with a 20-5 third quarter and held Newport to single digit scoring again in the fourth.
Newport scoring was led by Emma Crabtree, with 11 points, including a 3-pointer. Sammi Tellesen also hit a 3-pointer, scoring six points. Stormy McDaniel also scored six points and Stacy Keck hit a 3-pointer. Emily Hoffman hit both her free throws.
Last week Newport came up short against Davenport in a home contest Thursday night, Feb. 6, losing 58-22. Dusty McDaniel led Grizzly scoring with seven points.
Newport had a tough time at St. George’s losing 57-18 Tuesday, Feb. 4. Although they were shut out in the first quarter and didn’t score more than eight points in any other quarter, the Grizzlies hit four 3-pointers, with Keck sinking two. Crabtree and Tellesen each scored one. Keck and Crabtree led Newport scoring with six each.
