COLBERT – Newport Grizzly wrestling captured the 2B District 6 team title at the 2B League Wrestling Championships at Northwest Christian Saturday, Feb. 8.
Newport’s lone champion was Ares Swain, who earned a massive win over the number one ranked wrestler in the state at 190 pounds.
He showed his heart in an intense match where was able to gain a dominant 11-6 victory.
Newport placed the top eight wrestlers to advance to the state qualifier in Freeman.
“We were able to move 16 wrestlers on to next week,” coach Daniel Swain says. “We had three in the finals with Hunter Coe at 120 and Landen Pillers at 215 taking second.”
Preston Wacenske, 132, Gavin Carter, 150, Robert Warren,175, and Roman Tannehill, 285, all won third place in their weight brackets. J.J. Findlay, 120, and Nate Shaw, 144, came in fourth. Tyson Nunley, 132, and Connor Mc-Quinn, 215, placed fifth. Cody Andrea, 126, and Jaden Medrano placed sixth.
Colt Vinther, 138, placed seventh, and Prestyn Holly placed eighth.
Newport travels to Freeman Friday-Saturday, Feb. 14-15 (TBA) for the 1B/2B State Qualifier.
