USK — The Port of Pend Oreille has hired two full-time service members through the Washington Climate Corps Network to advance clean transportation initiatives in the regional freight rail sector.
“This partnership not only strengthens the Port’s operations but provides local residents with career-building opportunities in the rail industry,” said Kelly Driver, Port of Pend Oreille executive director. “The new service members will receive comprehensive training in modern locomotive operations and maintenance, with a specific focus on clean diesel technology and rail systems.”
One member will specialize in locomotive operations and maintenance, including advanced work with Tier 3 and Tier 4 diesel engine systems. The second member will focus on diesel mechanics, track maintenance and conductor training.
These highly specialized skills are increasingly valuable across the transportation sector as industries transition to cleaner technologies.
“This partnership with the Washington Climate Corps Network strengthens our local workforce while advancing cleaner transportation solutions,” Driver said. “These positions offer more than just jobs — they provide our local workforce with transferable skills that can lead to long-term careers in transportation, mechanical engineering and clean energy sectors.” The comprehensive training program includes federal certifications through the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Rail Administration and Federal Transit Administration. These credentials, combined with hands-on experience in modern rail operations and clean diesel technology, prepare participants for advancement opportunities throughout the transportation industry, where skilled technicians and operators are in high demand.
Both service members will share their experiences and knowledge with the community through regular presentations at Port Commissioner meetings and the Economic Development Advisory Committee, helping to raise awareness about career opportunities in clean transportation.
The Washington Climate Corps Network is a state initiative coordinated by Serve Washington that connects organizations and individuals to build climate resilience across the state, with a focus on serving communities facing disproportionate environmental challenges.
