SPOKANE VALLEY — The Newport boys basketball team got into the district playoffs with a pair if late season wins, but saw their year conclude with a 71-53 loss to Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Saturday, Feb. 15, at West Valley High School.
Newport couldn’t overcome a 26-9 first quarter, despite Austin Owen scoring 24 points, including three 3-pointers. Berg Hughes and Zach Peone also hit 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough against a dozen 3-pointers by the Broncos. Hughes had scored 11 points for Newport.
It was the second Grizzly loss in the double elimination district tournament. They lost 74-46 to St. George’s Feb. 10.
Newport dropped down a class because of enrollment this year, but didn’t get into a weaker league. The Northeast 2B League was tough. The north conference in which Newport played, included Reardan, was undefeated in league play, with a 20-1 overall record.
Freeman, a longtime Newport rival who also dropped down from the Northeast 1A league, finished second in the south division with a 18-3 overall record. They finished second in the division behind Colfax, which was undefeated in conference play at 8-0. Colfax had an 18-1 record.
Newport finished the season with a 2-10 league record and a 3-20 overall record.
Newport girls have tough month to end season
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Newport Grizzly girls’ basketball team brought their season to a conclusion at the district playoffs with a 70-15 loss to Colfax Saturday, Feb. 15 at West Valley. They lost a previous district playoff game 68-28 to Liberty Feb. 10.
Dusty McDaniel led Newport scoring against Colfax with seven points.
Newport got their last win Jan. 29, a 44-29 win over Chewelah. The Grizzlies finished the season with a 2-10 league record. They were 4-18 overall.
Spartans off to state qualifier
ST. MARIES — Priest River Lamanna High wrestling heads to St. Maries this weekend for the 3A District I-II/ CIL Championship to see who will qualify for the upcoming state tournament in Pocatello. District championships are Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.
Selkirk’s Davis wins first
DEER PARK — Selkirk’s Jameson Davie won the 165-pound championship at the district tournament Saturday, Dec. 15. Jaxson Chantry won second at 144, Nathan Rasmussen won third at 175 and Tristan Vanarsdall won fifth at 175.
They all qualify to compete at the Mat Classic, Feb. 20-22 at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma.
