Newport sending six to state in track and field

CHATTAEROY – The Newport Grizzly track and field team qualified six athletes for the state track and field championships following their performances at the District 7 1A District championships at Riverside High School last weekend. The state championships are set for May 23-25 in Yakima.

Newport’s Damien Hamberg won the triple jump with a personal record jump of 40-feet, 4-inches.

Taigen Mitcham won second in the boys shot put with another personal record throw of 48-feet, 3-inches, a quarter of an inch less than the Lakeside winner threw. Ronan Sherman won second in the discus.

The boys 4x100 relay team, made up of Jacksen and Lucas Crosswhite, Mitcham and Aiden Kramer finished fourth and qualified for state. They qualified based on their times.
